They soar together through the night sky, going up to the highest corner of the tallest building in the city. His old eyes watch them carefully, his son's huge, leathery wings forming a batlike drop against the manmade lighting. He misses seeing the wink of the stars above their heads. Even here, so high up above the humans, there are still so few nights when they can see the stars. It would do them all well, Hudson knows, if they could escape these tight, noisy quarters and go where true peace glistens.
If, he thinks forlornly, there is even such a place left. He could ask Elisa sometime, question the detective when she is alone, but then there are so few times that the woman has a chance to be by herself, fewer still that she knows what peace is. It would do even her well, he knows, to escape all this noise and pollution. His own wings itch. He'll take flight soon, but for now, he just watches and waits -- and keeps a watchful eye out to make sure the children do not disturb his favorite and his lady. Lexington knows what he's about, and the two exchange a few looks from time to time, especially when the intellectual calls to his brothers, distracting them from wondering where Goliath has gone or trying to wander into trouble.
Drawing closer to peace and nature would do them all well, Hudson knows, but this time also does Goliath and Elisa well. She does his old boy well, he thinks, watching their silhouettes pressing closely together. They're actually kissing tonight, though he knows it will go no further. She's still not certain she can mate with a gargoyle, and Goliath will not attempt such a deed as long as his ring is not yet on the maiden's finger -- and that is a question the boy will not even consider posing as long as he thinks himself a monster.
Hudson sighs inwardly. Every night, they rescue people, and every night, those people still scream and run in fright, all but Elisa. She is one of a kind amongst her people, and the perfect compliment to his Goliath. He wonders if perhaps there was a reason they were all cursed. Goliath brings them together, but Elisa is the One he has always needed. She is his soul mate. Hudson shakes his greying head. What a shame, almost a tragedy, he thinks, that his boy had to wait so long to find his perfect mate. But now he has found her at last, and his future, Hudson reassures himself, will be bright with his perfect soul mate.
It will be as bright as the stars themselves that are shining somewhere beyond all this city mess. He only wishes he could see their beauty too, but one night, before he dies, he will see their beauty. He will see Goliath and his soul mate soar together underneath their silver lights through their wide, open spaces of freedom. He will see his children frolick in that freedom and that which lays beyond. He will see his family happy and free, -- and only then will the old warrior allow himself to truly rest.
He steps off of the building and swoops off into the sky, but he doesn't go far. He keeps within earshot of the children, always quick to answer their calls so that their parents, who no more asked for the job than he did to raise their father though it's been a blessing, can have the tender moments they so richly deserve and need, even if it takes them another hundred years to admit such openly.
